As you get older, health becomes more and more important in your life. What you eat has a severe impact on your life. Unfortunately, few can afford actual healthy food. This is where food assistance came in, providing food stamps to millions of Americans.

Well, not anymore. The House will soon vote on the farm bill and cut a huge portion of the budget allocated to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It is estimated that over $20 billion will be cut off for the next 10 years. The consequences of this action will severely endanger the health of many Americans who can’t afford to buy the good products.

Right now, up to 36% of the adult population in Americans is obese, and 17% of our children suffer from this disease. After the food stamps will be cut down, specialists estimate that the percentages will sky rocket. Fast food is cheap and bad for your health. But if you can’t afford anything else, what else is there to do? Moreover, the fear of hunger creates a psychological effect making people to eat more than they need.

You know that expression, ‘we’re too poor to be cheap”? It suits here quite well. Healthcare is way too expensive to get sick nowadays. The government is no longer pitching in to help us. So, what is there to do?

New Barriers to Eating Healthy

I’ll tell you what you can do. Raise your own food! There’s no better way to make sure that you are eating healthy than growing your own cereals, vegetables and fruits. However small your garden is, you’d be surprised how little land you need to cover your needs. Also, it’s so much cheaper than buying the artificially raised vegetables that look too good to be true. Even if your stock runs out, by then, you would have saved plenty of money to be able to afford to buy the good stuff.

Another advantage that I personally find very important to raising your own food is the exercise. You need to take care of whatever you want to grow, and that will put you on the move. That will also boost up your immunitary system. That, and the clean air you will benefit from the green space around your house. If you’re living in an apartment building, you can use flower pots to grow food.

So don’t spend too much time worrying about what the government is gonna pull next; instead, think what you can do not to fall prey to poverty and all the troubles it brings along.
