Home » Sgt. Doom » Alternative Uses for Wax – Part 1

It might sound weird, but wax is basically a must-have for survivalists such as us. You can put it up to so many good uses, because it is so flexible. Of course, the fact you can mold it in anything you want is just a small part of its functionality. From sealing jars to replacing missing pieces, it’s really great to have it around.

           1. Making Candles

Get wax, jars and some wicks. In order to make them last longer, use soy wax. Other than that, it also produces less smoke, is not that irritant and the smell is not so strong. One such candle can last for more than 50 hours. So now you have all the reasons to use soy wax.

Ingredients:

  •     Wax
  •     Wicks
  •     Can
  •     Lids
  •     Glass jars

Procedure:

Put water in a large pot and bring it to the boiling point. Don’t fill it in, so when you add the wax you don’t spill it. When the water is starting to heat, put the wicks in the jars. Add 2.5 lbs of soy wax flakes – half of the quantity – in a can and put it in the boiling water.

It helps if you have a hot glue gun with you so you can add just a drop of it on the bottom of the jar. That will enable the wick to stand straight after you add the wax. After the wax starts to cool, put a piece of aluminum foil on top of the jar and poke it with the wick so that it holds straight.

When the wax melts, pour the wax in the jars by using hot pads. After that, start melting the other half of the wax and pour it in the jars. Let it cool off and then cut the wicks off until they get to ¼ inch. Use the scissors to cut them equally.

Put lids on the jars, add some matches, pack it all up and store it in a good place to come in handy when a power outage comes.            pillar_candles_s

          2. Gear Protection

Use wax on your survival gear – jacket, pants, boots, backpack, cap, hoodie, etc. Add a layer of it on these items. This will help them be more resistant to water, although it will not make them completely waterproof.
